Seminar on UNDERSTANDING ALCOHOL MISUSE

The problem of alcohol misuse
Alcohol is both the favourite and most seductive drug available to people. Dependence on it is experienced by far more people than are addicted to tobacco, gambling, or illegal drugs such as heroin, cocaine or ecstasy. Each year thousands of people die prematurely because of the misuse of alcohol. Every week people are killed or seriously injured by others in drink-related accidents. Every day wives, husbands, partners and children are emotionally, verbally, sexually and physically abused by family members under the influence of alcohol. About half of all violent assaults, both at home and in public, are made by people who misuse alcohol. Nearly one-third of all murders are committed by people who are under the influence of alcohol. The misuse of alcohol is associated with 20 per cent to 30 per cent of suicides in general and 50 per cent of suicides among young people.

Responding to the problem of Alcohol Misuse
The Presentation Sisters and the Spiritans (Holy Ghost Congregation) wish to respond to the problem of alcohol misuse in a non-judgemental, compassionate, sympathetic and pastoral manner by offering a seminar on
Understanding Alcohol Misuse.

Rev. Dr. Tony Byrne, a Spiritan Priest, is the director of the seminar, and Sr. Kathleen Maguire MA, a Presentation Sister, is the facilitator of the seminar.
