Seminar on Facing up to Suicide

Suicide in Ireland
Suicide has always been a problem in Ireland. In the past it was greatly underreported and not spoken about openly – often due to the stigma attached to it, or insurance problems. To some this was a compassionate response; to others, it was sweeping the problem under the carpet. In the Republic of Ireland, the death rate from suicide is higher than the death rate from road traffic accidents. An average of 444 people die by suicide every year in the Republic of Ireland. It is estimated that approximately 11,000 people attempt suicide there annually. As a result of one single suicide more than fifty people grieve deeply and experience in particular the pain of blame, shame and rejection.
